Hello the Community,
Since 2014 Xiaomi has a division dedicated to semiconductors. This division has released the SoC Surge S1 team Mi 5C (twitter)
For two years now we have been waiting patiently for his successor S2 (which should have been officially announced at the same time as the Mi 8 last year).
Meanwhile, Big Data and AI are consumers of time and resources and become strategic issues in the medium and long term (photo, home automation, sports monitoring …).As an indication, the R & D has engulfed the first year no less than 130 million euros just for the development of H1.In time for the R & D dedicated to the SoC is fully functional and has caught up to be profitable, it should put 1 billion on the table. (Http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/kindle/2017-06/18/content_29785944.htm)An internal note indicates that this branch will undergo some changes. For example, Songguo Electronics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xiaomi, will be reorganized.
Songguo Electronics will see some of its teams transferred to a new company: Nanjing Big Fish Semiconductor. This company will be independent, but Xiaomi will nevertheless hold 25% of the capital. As for the rest, it will be up to the teams internally. This new entity will focus on research and development of chips, AI and IoT solutions in the semiconductor field, while Songguo will continue to focus on SoC chips for mobile phones and chip development dedicated to AI.A subtle way to dissociate the R & D and the manufacturing in fine, the R & D asking for crucial investments and being more a center of loss than of profit. As a reminder :- According to public information, Songguo Electronics was established in 2014 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Xiaomi, mainly active in the research and development of semiconductor chips.- On February 28, 2017, Xiaomi launched the S1 chip, becoming the world’s fourth-largest mobile phone brand with the ability to research and develop SoC chips for mobile phones.
Given the technological evolutions, do you think that we will see a modified S2 for the mid-range? A high-end SoC (S3)? Or Xiaomi chips (DSP …) accompanying Snapdragons for photo, audio, AI or home automation (video surveillance camera, central alarm …)?Have a good week All.
